Reading: I'm in the thick of La Belle Sauvage, Philip Pullman's new prequel to the His Dark Materials Trilogy, and it feels comfortable and familiar and wonderful. My only complaint is that the original series was so enlivened by Lyra -- one of my favorite literary characters of all time. Here, she's too young to speak (except for baby-babbling with her daemon, Pan), and I miss her voice and fiery, precocious perspective. Still loving the book, though.
Thinking: It's been troubling to read account after account of harassment and assault in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein allegations. I do feel, though, that something is finally different -- things that every woman (honestly, every woman) has always known about and dealt with are starting to actually change, and the powerful don't feel quite as protected as they once did. This is a really smart piece on the "economics of consent" that complicate what could be seen as a simple quandary for victims of abusive, powerful men like Weinstein.
Anticipating: I'm pretty intrigued by John Green's new novel, Turtles All the Way Down. I honestly haven't read much about it, but I did love The Fault in Our Stars (read it on a train and cried like a child in front of all my coworkers a few years ago). Have you read it and, if so, did you like it?
Making: I'm in the market for a good turkey chili recipe, but I haven't found once I've loved yet. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Playing: My husband and I are pretty hooked on Stranger Things Season 2. I always get sad at the end of shows we've binged over a few days; any recommendations for a new series to start?
Happy Friday -- have a great weekend!
